EU VAT Number Check
Check whether an EU VAT number is valid before you invoice a business customer or supplier.
What it does:
- Looks the number up in VIES, the official VAT Information Exchange System of the European Commission, and returns whether it is currently valid, plus the registered business name and address where the member state discloses them.
- If you give your own EU VAT number, VIES also issues a consultation number that you can keep as proof of due diligence (for example when you invoice at 0% VAT under the intra-community / reverse-charge rules).
- Validates the format of a number offline first (length and characters per country for all 27 EU member states and Northern Ireland, plus the check digit for Poland, Germany and Italy), so typos are caught without querying the registry.
- Tells you when a member state's registry is temporarily down, so an outage is never mistaken for an invalid number.
Good to know:
- Source: VIES (European Commission). No account or API key is needed and nothing about your checks is stored beyond a short in-memory cache (about ten minutes).
- Covers the EU-27 and Northern Ireland (prefix XI; Greece uses EL). The United Kingdom (GB) left VIES in 2021, so GB numbers cannot be checked here.
- Some countries do not disclose the business name or address; those fields are then left empty.
- Informational only: this is not tax or legal advice, and whether 0% VAT or reverse charge applies depends on further conditions. Confirm with your accountant.
